#BulldogSTRONG STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Jesus Alvarez

1

Student: Jesus Alvarez

Year in School: Senior

Plans After High School: Jesus wants to attend California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and pursue a degree in Software Engineering. University of California, Santa Barbara and Irvine are universities under consideration as well.

GPS Focus: PRIDE

What Makes Jesus #BulldogSTRONG: One of the essential elements of being #BulldogSTRONG at Golden Valley High School is for students being able to demonstrate PRIDE in the classroom, on campus, and in the community. Most of the time, PRIDE is exemplified in more extroverted ways such as cheerleaders, mascots, or athletes pumping up the crowd to increase energy levels to help the team on to victory. However, PRIDE can also be displayed in more modest approaches such as showing up to school on time and ready to learn as well consciously making good choices daily. For Senior Jesus Alvarez, he quietly and humbly has immense PRIDE in being a Bulldog at GVHS. Known for his incredible work ethic, Jesus demonstrates his PRIDE by putting forth his best effort in his academic pursuits. Throughout his academic career, Jesus has earned a staggering 4.42 cumulative GPA while being enrolled in some of the most rigorous courses at GVHS as well as participation in the prestigious Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program which prepares students for careers in engineering. With aspirations of attending California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, Jesus is appreciative of the engineering classes he has taken at GVHS in order to prepare him for college. “The variety of engineering projects that I have created have been difficult, fun to complete, and have truly prepared me for my future endeavors in engineering,” comments Jesus. At Cal Poly SLO, Jesus plans to major in Software Engineering to hopefully work at a Fortune 500 company for his career.

In addition to the PRIDE he has academically, Jesus has genuine PRIDE in being a student at GVHS for a myriad of reasons. First, Jesus takes PRIDE in the staff that have helped shape his academic growth. Jesus graciously praises some of his teachers such as Yaneli Bravo-Ceja, Judiah Hopkins, and Tracy Costa as major influencers on his academic success. “Each one of these teachers have taught me various skills in and outside the classroom,” Jesus humbly comments, “They have shared real-life experiences that have influenced me to make positive decisions.” Additionally, Jesus takes PRIDE in the success of the GVHS athletic teams and with every win, his PRIDE grows more and more. “One of the most memorable moments I have had at GVHS is going to Scripps Ranch to watch our basketball team compete in the state playoffs,” explains Jesus, “This basketball season, I loved seeing the support our school showed to the team.” In sum, GVHS has been a special place for Jesus - a place of immense PRIDE for him. “The teachers, staff, and students make Golden Valley a special place to me. They all help create a safe and fun learning environment.” For the tremendous PRIDE he has in showing up on time, ready to learn, and in the genuine joy he has in being a Bulldog at Golden Valley High School, Jesus Alvarez is #BulldogSTRONG.

What #BulldogSTRONG Means to Jesus: "#BulldogSTRONG to me means giving it your all and demonstrating growth and pride, whether it be academically or on one of the sports teams at Golden Valley.”

What Teachers and Staff Think of Jesus:

“I have had the privilege of working with Jesus since he was an incoming freshman and I am proud to see him grow into a fine young man.  He exemplifies #BulldogSTRONG in the classroom with his brilliant designs in engineering and great insights in physics.  He is kind, positive to all around.  Often he helps peers, motivating them to do their best.  Truly an outstanding young man.” Judiah Hopkins, AP Physics & Engineering Teacher & eSports Coach, Golden Valley High School

"I have known Jesus for three years now. He’s one of the most dedicated, respectful and wonderful student’s that I know. It has been a pleasure to have him as my student all this time and I know that he will do incredible things after high school because he has what it takes.” Yaneli Bravo-Ceja, AP Spanish Language Teacher, Golden Valley High School

“While Jesus was a student in my AP European History class during his Sophomore year, I was always impressed with his sincerity and willingness to work hard. If he had any questions or concerns, he had no problem discussing them with me.  As a Senior taking Government/Economics, I have been pleased to observe that his strong work ethic, sincerity, and high academic standards have followed him. It truly has been a pleasure getting to know Jesus over the past few years.” Tracy Costa, AP European History Teacher, Golden Valley High School

“Jesús is a very respectful human being. His kindness and growth mindset are exemplary. He continually shows growth by being a lifelong learner (I still remember the time he asked if we could cover matrices in our math club meetings since he and his friends had not learned those before). For these reasons, Mr. Álvarez is #BulldogSTRONG!” Luis Jauregui, AP Calculus Teacher, Golden Valley High School
