Student: Sebastian Guzman

Year in School: Senior

GPS Focus: GROWTH, PRIDE, & SERVICE

What Makes Sebastian #BulldogSTRONG: In poignant message to student athletes, Cincinnati Bengals star Quarterback, Joe Burrow made a very powerful statement to today’s youth, "Don’t have a workout and post it on Instagram the next day and then go take a day off the next day and everyone thinks you’re working hard but you’re not. Work in silence...Don’t worry about all that social media stuff.” The idea behind Burrow’s statement is to encourage student athletes not to focus on the attention gained from working out, but to work hard in silence in order to benefit the team. For Bulldog Senior, Sebastian Guzman, silently working hard as a football player and member of ASB student leadership has positively impacted the campus of Golden Valley High School. Sebastian has been a four year player for the Bulldog football program playing positions that normally don’t receive the spotlight, but are essential in the success and operational flow of the team: offensive right tackle, defensive end, and defensive tackle. For Sebastian, these positions have taught him the value of selfless play and commitment to his teammates. “Football has been valuable in my GROWTH as a Bulldog,” humbly comments Sebastian, “I had great moments where I grew with my teammates and learned important lessons along the way. One of my goals was to play hard till the clock had zeros across the board and I can honestly say that I accomplished that goal playing at GVHS.” For his hard work and selfless effort, Sebastian only allowed two sacks from his right tackle position and throughout his career, he has earned the Coach’s Award and genuine respect from coaches and his teammates. “Sebastian embodies the type of athlete we want on the football field,” states Head Coach James Cain, “I wish all of my players had his attitude, effort, and commitment to the team.”

Beyond the gridiron of the football field, Sebastian has carried his work ethic and commitment to the SERVICE of others as the Public Relations Officer for ASB Student Leadership. In his first year as a student leader on the campus of GVHS, Sebastian has shown tremendous GROWTH in and out the classroom. “I joined leadership because I wanted to learn new things, make memories, have fun, and lead others to the same,” comments Sebastian. He is excited for what is in store for his classmates for Spring 2022 as there will be a movie night on the football field, Spring Spirit Week, Grad Night, Prom, and much more. Beyond the activities, Sebastian has continued to develop and GROW as a selfless leader on our campus. “What I have learned about myself at GVHS is the ability to have courage and confidence to help others in need,” humbly comments Sebastian, “Service is about doing what it takes to help others, the community, or even loved ones and builds a greater purpose in you to continue to do the right things.” For his kind, humble, quiet, and selfless commitment to his teammates on the football team as an offensive/defensive lineman and towards his fellow classmates as Public Relations Officer in ASB Student Leadership, Sebastian Guzman is #BulldogSTRONG.

What Teachers and Staff Think of Sebastian:

“Sebastian Guzman is a student and leader that is as impressive in his academics and personality as he is in his stature.   He has exhibited GROWTH through his academics by increasing his GPA every year while at Golden Valley, so that he is now near a 4.0 student. He exhibited PRIDE during the football season when he suited up for every game and played hard without complaint, no matter the circumstance.   Sebastian’s contribution to the Student Council shows his SERVICE to his fellow classmates and staff as he works to make the school a better place for all.   He is #BULLDOGSTRONG,  and a heckuva nice young man.  I’m very proud of him.” Darren Buckey, Learning Center Teacher, Golden Valley High School

“Sebastian approached me last spring at the end of one of our home football games and inquired about student leadership and ASB, and I am so glad he did! He has been a wonderful asset to the program. He is kind, helpful, and a positive presence each day in class. He steps up to help where he is needed, and very much embodies what it means to be #BulldogSTRONG! He is just a very nice young man all the way around, and I am glad to have got the chance to get to know him!” Valerie Black, Activities Director, Golden Valley High School

“Sebastian is one of the most energetic, passionate and unique students I have ever met. He embodies a #BulldogSTRONG attitude. He is quick to help out in the classroom and is always eager to participate in the lesson. He takes pride in his academics and is always eager to do better. I can always count on Sebastian to give 100% effort even if the assignment is a challenge. He will be a bright light anywhere he goes!” Cameron Hertzog, Government/Economics Teacher, Golden Valley High School

“Sebastian has a quiet strength in class that displays a confidence and peace and the #BulldogStrong quality of Service. His service is shown in how he treats everyone with kindness and with how helpful he is with the other students. I have noticed that he can be extremely helpful to other students, especially when they ask for his help. As a leader in the senior class, Sebastian is a young man that others  look up to and also look to for help, and he is a shining example of what a true helper can be.” David Lollar, English Teacher, Golden Valley High School

“Sebastian joined my Strong Body class at the beginning of second semester and does a  great job everyday; he is one of my hardest workers. He often helps the other students in class and helps motivate others to do their very best.” Bill Richardson, PE Department Chair and Head Volleyball Coach, Golden Valley High School
